Here is what I got from my friend that is working on the DigiDash setup.
This is going to take him some time and he isn't interested in join the list
at this time.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

The current status of my car is that it's currently located in my garage, my
driveway, my back yard, and my basement.

I'm so far away from the computer interface and gauges, that it's not
currently a consideration, but my eventual intent is this:

I picked up several 4.5 inch LCD displays, 12 volt with component inputs. I
will either place these in place of my speedo, tach, and clock in the
existing instrument panel, or better locate them in a completely custom
panel.

If I decide to keep the existing center console (likely with modifications),
I will mount a 7 inch display where the RS gauge pack is resides at the head
of the console, just beneath the dash. It would server as a master display.

Also, as I mentioned today, I'm toying with the idea of picking up a late
model Pontiac wheel, with audio control, and sticking one of my displays in
it, then rewiring the wheel buttons as keyboard inputs, and having the
steering wheel display become my multimedia display.

Each display would be associated with an individual X11 server, and what
displays on them respectively, would depend on the client application/s
attached. For example, the display replacing the speedometer would have a
client that represents a speedometer. There probably already exists a
library and chunks of code that will allow me to take a numeric value, and
use it to increment a gauge. Initially, I'll probably take the encoder
output from the transmission and display a number that will be actual speed,
based on whatever the input equates to in MPH. If I can't get what I need
in terms of software, I'll do something hokey, like draw several images of
the speedometer with the needle at each position, from say 0 to 160MPH.
Similarly, I'd do the same "half/assed" shit with the fuel, oil and
temperature gauges. I hope I can find software, or sufficient pieces not to
do something so silly.

I purchased from Ebay a serial input board with several analog and 2 digital
inputs which I intend to interface with existing, or similar sensors. If
that all works out, I'll need only buy the encoder for the speedometer,
which Jegs sells for use with their digital speedometers. It screws on on
the transmission @ the speedo gear housing in place of the cable.

I don't at this time have a well thought out plan and given the current
condition of the vehicle, I'm trying not to put too much thought into it. I
know what I want to do, and I know that what I want to do has all been done.

If I get the car back on it's wheels by the end of the summer, I'll probably
make the interior of the vehicle my winter project and hopefully visit this
portion of the project at that time.

I also have a relay board housing several 30 amp solid state relays which I
intend to wire up to a serial output board, allowing me to control things
via software, based on inputs. In part, my car interface PC will also act
as a software PLC.

I do intend to have a network of PC's built into this car, with mild
redundancy in that if the main interface PC board dies, I could have my
multimedia interface replace those functions, and vice verse. I've got a
lot of craziness I'd like to make happen. I just need the time. It's all
doable.
