You are correct. The damper merely indicates that the diff is out of a manual transmission, 1.8l car. Further steps are required to confirm it is a Torsen. You can pull the axels or drain plug and look in the hole. Or, If you know the car it came out of: Base car - Open diff. Base cars have manual windows, manual mirrors, and no power steering. An A, B or C, package car, as well as an M-edition, Torsen diff - And Power mirrors, power windows, and power steering.
