Whatever happened to looking at the gears through the oil filler hole? Admittedly this is probably harder if the diff is still in the car. It worked for me on my '94 diff with the diff out of the car. The guy said it was no problem and in fact they like these kinds of calls. Presumably, gain brand loyalty in the market? I'm still looking for a Red 84-07 with zero rust. If the car came with cloth seats it probably didn't have a torsen. If it did come with leather seats it probably came with torsen ... and the most underbody bracing of any year Miata. The seats may have been replaced so look for the bracing (half a dozen round steel bars with flatened ends) under the rear of the body.
