You definitely want to set timing and idle speed with the jumper in. How
hard could it be to find a paper clip? When you put the jumper in, it
locks the timing idle control out (fixes timing at ten degrees, so when
you set cam sensor to get 10BTDC, the ecu's timing map is starting from
the proper reference point). It also locks out the closed loop idle
control and fixes the IAC at a fixed duty cycle right around the middle
of its range. If you adjust without the jumper, the idle is closed loop
and corrects for whatever you do with the idle air screw.
I had to check somebody's base setting at the track this weekend and did
it with a piece of safety wire I found lurking on the ground waiting to
take out somebody's expensive race tire. Blows my mind people just leave
that stuff all over racetracks.

Subject: IAC Cleaning? TEN-GND for Timing? Timing?

After I adjusted the timing (14 BTDC) and idle (850) my 94 would idle
very low when I turned on the AC.
The 94 has the IAC solenoid and hot water valve thing in one block unit.
I removed/cleaned/replaced the IAC and it seems to work now, the idle
droops momentarily when I turn on the AC and then returns to normal.

I read somewhere that oil bathed filters like K&N can cause the IAC to
get gummed up and stuck. I suspect this is what happened. I ran a K&N
cone for a while but I never got around to installing some kind of
isolation and it just looked like a hot air intake kit sucking air from
the area around the exhaust, so I put the stock filter assembly back on.

I was wondering if anyone else had similar experiences?

Also, when I set the timing/idle the car was warm but I did not have the
TEN-GND jumper in place. Is this necessary? If so, why? I can redo
the timing and idle, if necessary but it seems to be running fine.

Lastly, what is a good timing for stock street 1.8s? Factory sets 10d.
Forums say more for better performance. What do you think?
