1928 – The first professional recordings take place in Nashville when
DeFord Bailey lays down eight tracks at Victor Records Studios.
1949 – Frankie Laine records “Mule Train.”
1954 – Elvis Presley makes his first and only appearance at the Grand
Ole Opry. Opry manager Jim Denny tells Presley to go back to driving a
truck.
1957 – Connie Francis records “Who’s Sorry Now” for MGM.
1957 – Larry Williams releases his single, “Bony Maronie” b/w “You Bug
Me, Baby” on Specialty Records.
1959 – Fifteen Elvis Presley fans are arrested in Germany after
marching through the streets of Leipzig shouting, "Long live Elvis
Presley!"
1961 – The Crystals release their single, “Oh Yeah, Maybe Baby” b/w
“There’s No Other (Like My Baby).” It is the first release on Phil
Spector’s and Lester Sill’s Philles Records label.
1962 – Elvis Presley releases his single, “Return To Sender” b/w
“Where Do You Come From.”
1964 – Brian Epstein’s autobiography, A Cellarful Of Noise -
ghostwritten by Derek Taylor - is published in the UK.
1965 – Manfred Mann plays Prague in Czechoslovakia, becoming the first
Western band to take the stage behind the “Iron Curtain.”
1965 – The Who makes their U.S. television debut on Shindig! Also on
the show is The Four Tops, Gerry and The Pacemakers, Billy Joe Royal
and Linda Gayle.

1968 – Motown sues their most prolific songwriting team, Holland-

Gladys Knight and The Pips and Eddie Kendricks.
1976 – Joe Cocker appears on Saturday Night Live and duets with John
Belushi’s Cocker character on “Feelin’ Alright.”
1977 – The bodies of Elvis Presley and his mother Gladys are moved
from Forest Hill Cemetery to Graceland after police uncover a plot to
steal Elvis’ body.
1977 – Kenny Rogers marries his fourth wife, Marianne Gordon.
1978 – Toto releases their debut single, “Hold The Line” b/w “Takin’
It Back.”
1979 – Abba appears at Radio City Music Hall in New York.
1980 – Leaveil Degree of The Whipers begins serving a two-year prison
term for his role in a 1979 gem heist.
1982 – Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett re-unite with their former
Genesis band mates for a one-time benefit performance for Gabriel's
WOMAD project (World of Music, Arts and Dance) at the Milton Keynes
Bowl in Buckinghamshire.
1983 – Abba's Agnetha Fältskog is involved in a car crash in Skane,
Sweden, and suffers a concussion.

1986 – The Everly Brothers are awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of

1994 – John “Cougar” Mellencamp confirms to the press that he recently

1996 – Pearl Jam’s concert in Hartford, Connecticut ends in a riot

2002 – Adam Ant (aka Stuart Goddard) pleads guilty to threatening
drinkers with a replica pistol in a London pub, but escapes a prison
sentence after the judge rules that the incident was a result of

2002 – Robbie Williams signs the most lucrative British record deal in
history when he signs with EMI for £80 million.
2003 – Courtney Love is arrested for being under the influence of a
controlled substance when police are called to a suspected burglary at
the Los Angeles house of Love's former boyfriend and ex-manager Jim
Barber in the early hours.
2004 – 55-year old Billy Joel marries his third wife, 23-year old
cooking student Katie Lee, at his Long Island home. They stay married
for five years.
2007 – Because of her partying and out of control lifestyle, a Los
Angeles judge orders Britney Spears to turn over her children to their
father, Kevin Federline.
2009 – Crystal Gayle receives a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
2010 – Farm Aid celebrates its 25 year anniversary with a concert at
