1948 – George Morgan becomes a member of the Grand Ole Opry.
1951 – Jump-blues singer Richard Penniman, already going by the stage
name Little Richard, makes his first recordings at Atlanta radio
station WGST.
1951 – Johnny Ray and The Four Lads record “Cry” at Columbia Studios
in New York City.
1953 – Carl Butler makes his Grand Ole Opry debut.
1954 – Still smarting from his Grand Ole Opry rejection, Elvis Presley
makes his debut appearance on the Louisiana Hayride from Memorial
Auditorium in Shreveport, Louisiana.
1955 – Bill Haley and His Comets and Elvis Presley are the opening
acts for country music singer Hank Snow for two shows at the Municipal
Auditorium in Oklahoma City. After the second show, Snow introduces
Presley to Colonel Tom Parker.
1957 – Sam Cook’s “You Send Me” hits the charts.
1957 – The Alan Freed movie Mister Rock And Roll premieres at the
Paramount Theatre in New York. The film includes performances by
Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Brook Benton, Frankie Lymon and The
Teenagers, Clyde McPhatter and others.
1961 – Patsy Cline releases her single, “Crazy” b/w “Who Can I Count
On?”
1962 – The Miracles record “You Really Got A Hold On Me” at Hitsville
U.S.A. in Detroit, after which they depart for Washington, DC and
Motown’s first package tour, which includes The Miracles, Marvin Gaye,
The Supremes, Little Stevie Wonder and Mary Wells.

1982 – Thanks to Shakin' Stevens being ill and not able to appear,
Culture Club appears on Top Of The Pops, performing “Do You Really
Want To Hurt Me.”
1986 – A concert is held at the Fox Theatre in St Louis, Missouri, to
celebrate Chuck Berry’s 60th birthday, which is two days away.
Participants include Berry, Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, Robert Cray,
Etta James, Linda Ronstadt, Julian Lennon and others. The concert is
filmed and recorded for release.
1990 – Country music singer Naomi Judd announces her retirement after
being diagnosed with Hepatitis C.
1992 – Bob Dylan celebrates the 30th anniversary of his recording
debut with a concert at Madison Square Garden. Guest performers
include Neil Young, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Roger McGuinn, Tom
Petty, Ron Wood and others. Sinéad O'Connor is also on the bill and
gets booed off the stage for her tearing up the Pope’s picture on
Saturday Night Live two weeks earlier.
1993 – Aretha Franklin sings “The National Anthem” at the World Series
games between the Toronto Blue Jays and Philadelphia Phillies.
2001 – Bob Dylan, who chose to hire extra security guards for his
comeback Love And Theft Tour, fires two of those guards when they
refuse Dylan admittance into his own concert.
2002 – Dolly Parton begins her first tour of the United Kingdom in
nearly 20 years.
2003 – Simon and Garfunkel begin their Old Friends Tour in Wilkes-
Barre, Pennsylvania.
2007 – French rock star Bertrand Cantat is freed from jail after
serving half of an eight-year sentence for killing his actress
girlfriend, Marie Trintignant.
2007 – Macedonian pop star Toše Proeski is killed in a car crash in
Croatia.
2007 – Madonna signs a ground-breaking $120 million recording and
touring contract with concert promoter Live Nation, becoming the first
major star to choose an all-in-one agreement with a tour company over
a traditional record contract.
2010 – Auburn University graduate student Justin Havird names a new
species of fish, Lepidocephalichthys zeppelini, because the fish's
pectoral fin reminded him of the double-neck guitar used by Jimmy Page.
