1949 – Hank Williams makes his final appearance on the Louisiana
Hayride.
1952 – Frank Sinatra records “Birth Of The Blues” in Hollywood for
Columbia Records.
1953 – Elvis Presley graduates from Humes High School in Memphis,
Tennessee.
1955 – Buddy Holly opens for Elvis Presley at a free show at
Connelly's Pontiac Showroom car dealership in Lubbock, Texas, after
which they sign autographs together.
1957 – The Isley Brothers release their debut single, “The Angels
Cried” b/w “The Cow Jumped Over The Moon” on Teenage Records.
1958 – Jerry Wallace records "How The Time Flies" at Gold Star in
Hollywood.
1959 – Elvis Presley enters the base hospital in Germany suffering
from tonsillitis, where he will stay for six days.
1963 – The mayor of Aurora, Indiana, declares the day "Lonnie Mack
Day."
1964 – The Rolling Stones make their second television appearance in
the U.S. on The Hollywood Palace, performing "I Just Want To Make Love
To You" and “Not Fade Away.” Dean Martin is the host.
1964 – During a morning photo shoot for The Saturday Evening Post,
Ringo Starr collapses and is hospitalized with tonsillitis and
pharyngitis less than 28 hours before starting a world tour. Too late
to cancel the tour, Brian Epstein and George Martin agree on a
replacement, and in the evening, session drummer Jimmy Nicol is
brought in to Abbey Road to rehearse with The Beatles as Ringo's
temporary stand-in. George Harrison is furious with the idea of having
a stand-in drummer, and let’s everyone know.
1965 – Gary Lewis and The Playboys record “Save Your Heart For Me”
with help from the Wrecking Crew.
1966 – Jimmy Ruffin releases his single, "What Becomes Of The Broken
Hearted" b/w "Baby I've Got It."
1967 – Jefferson Airplane appears on American Bandstand, lip-synching
to "Somebody To Love" and "White Rabbit" back-to-back.
1967 – The Doors release their single, “Light My Fire” b/w “The
Crystal Ship.”
1968 – Valerie Solanas shoots Velvet Underground producer and artist
Andy Warhol and art curator Mario Amaya at Warhol's art studio in New
York City after Warhol claims he lost a script she gave him. Warhol is
pronounced dead at the scene, but is revived and survives.
1970 – After the BBC bans The Kinks' "Lola" for the song's reference
to Coca-Cola, Ray Davies flies 6,000 miles round trip from London to
New York and back again just to record the line "cherry cola" to
replace the Coke plug.
1970 – Stevie Wonder releases his single, "Signed, Sealed, Delivered
I'm Yours" b/w "I'm More Than Happy (I'm Satisfied)") on Tamla
Records.
1970 – Bob Dylan records "Kingston Town (Jamaica)," "Can't Help
Falling In Love With You," "Long Black Veil," "Lily Of The West," and
"One More Weekend" at Columbia Studios in New York City.
1972 – The Rolling Stones begin their Exile On Main St. Tour at the
Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver, British Columbia, with Martha Reeves
and Stevie Wonder as opening acts.
1975 – The original production of Chicago: A Vaudeville Musical -
simply known as just Chicago - opens at the 46th Street Theatre on
Broadway and runs for 936 performances over the next two years.
1983 – An undiagnosed schizophrenic suffering from psychosis and
hearing voices, renowned session drummer Jim Gordon murders his mother
with a hammer and knife.
1989 – Reba McIntire gets married for the second time to her manager
and guitar player, Narvel Blackstock. They are still married.
1990 – The Big Day festival takes place in Glasgow, Scotland,
featuring Wet Wet Wet, Deacon Blue, Hothouse Flowers, Sheena Easton,
The Silencers, John Martyn, The Chimes, Big Country, Hue And Cry, The
Average White Band, Aswad, Billy Bragg and others. Six hours of the
event are broadcast live on television.
1991 – In an attempt to pay off some of his back tax debt, Willie
Nelson releases the album, Who'll Buy My Memories: The I.R.S. Tapes.
1994 – Pearl Jam's Eddy Vedder marries long-time girlfriend and
Hovercraft guitarist Beth Liebling in Rome Italy. They stay married
for six years.
1994 – Former lead singer for Lighthouse Bob McBride is sentenced to
90 days in jail for robbing a drug store to feed his heroin habit.
McBride is also ordered to organize two benefit concerts to raise drug
abuse awareness.
2000 – Just days after being fired from The Allman Brothers Band,
guitarist Dickey Betts is arrested for threatening his wife's life and
trashing their house. He is admitted to a psychiatric hospital for
overnight evaluation, and released the next day.
2000 – Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw are arrested outside the George
Strait Country Music Festival at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Buffalo, New
York, when Chesney steals a Mounted Reserve Deputy's horse and McGraw
intervenes against the deputies when they try to catch Chesney.
2002 – In the UK, the Queen's Golden Jubilee concert is held,
featuring Brian Wilson, Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Sting, Elton
John, Joe Cocker, The Corrs, Cliff Richard and many others.
2003 – Barry Manilow breaks his nose and knocks himself unconscious
for four hours when he accidently walks into a wall in his Palm
Springs home.
2010 – Hundreds walk out of a Whitney Houston concert at the Denmark
Forum in Copenhagen when the singer continues to falter and sing out
of tune. In his review of the concert, critic Thomas Soie Hansen of
the Berlingske Tidende newspaper wrote: “She looked and sounded like a
person who doesn’t have many years left to live. At the end of the
show she looked like she was ready to explode.”
