1954 – Gospel singer Mahalia Jackson signs with Columbia Records.

1960 – After more than 12 years on the air, the Louisiana Hayride

1967 – Beatles manager Brian Epstein dies from a drug overdose in London 
while the group is away in Bangor, Wales, at a seminar being given by the 
Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Upon learning of Epstein’s death, Paul McCartney 
immediately heads back to London, leaving John, George and Ringo to give a 
brief interview in Bangor before also returning to London.

1967 – The Evening Express newspaper runs a story on former Beatles drummer 
Pete Best, reporting that he now works in a bakery earning £18 a week.

1969 – Led Zeppelin plays the first of two nights at the Casino Ballroom in 
Hampton Beach, New Hampshire.

1977 – Jackson Browne appears at the Merriweather Post

Alpine Valley Music Theatre in East Troy, Wisconsin - a helicopter carrying 
Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton’s agent Bobby Brooks, Clapton bodyguard 
Nigel Browne, Clapton tour manager Colin Smythe, and pilot Jeff Brown, 
crashes into a ski slope moments after takeoff, killing everyone on board.

1992 – John Lennon's original hand-written lyrics for "A Day In The Life" 
fetches $87,000 at Sotheby's auction.

1993 – This year’s Reading Festival begins at Little John’s Farm in 
England. The three-day event features music by Radiohead, Tool, Rage

Order, Blur, Primus, The The, Siouxsie and The Banshees, Bad Brains, The

1999 – This year’s three-day Carling Weekend Festival begins in Reading,

2001 – The Dixie Chicks sue Sony Music for $4 million in unpaid royalties 
and to terminate their contract with the company.

2003 – P. Diddy is sued for $5 million by Stephanie Grieso, claiming she 
was assaulted by a bouncer outside his New York restaurant, Justin’s. 
Grieso alleges she was arguing outside the restaurant when the bouncer 
grabbed her by the neck and pushed her down on the pavement, causing her 
leg injuries.

2003 – Singer/songwriter Janis Ian marries her girlfriend, Nashville 
defense lawyer Patricia Snyder, in Toronto, Canada, where gay marriage is 
legal.

2004 – The Carling Leeds Festival begins at Bramham Park, near Leeds inWest 
Yorkshire. Artists appearing during the three-day event include Green 
Day, The White Stripes, Morrissey, The Offspring, Lostprophets, The 
Libertines, Super Furry Animals, The Darkness, Supergrass, Reel Big Fish,

2007 – Lawyers for Kevin Federline ask Britney Spears to pay some of her 
ex-husband's legal expenses in their divorce case, claiming that Federline 
has "no net income" after various expenses, and that Ms. Spears is "clearly 
the monied party" in the dispute.

2008 – MacKenzie Phillips is arrested at the Los Angeles International 
Airport for possession of heroin and cocaine.

2010 – Marvin Hamlisch is named the conductor of the Pasadena Pops 
Orchestra.
