1954 – Elvis Presley releases his single “Good Rockin’ Tonight” b/w “I

1954 – Montgomery, Alabama, celebrates “Hank Williams Day.”

1956 – Elvis Presley's upcoming single, "Love Me Tender," becomes the first 
45 to reach one million in pre-orders.

1962 – Loretta Lynn joins the Grand Ole Opry.

1964 – A group of businessmen offer Beatles manager Brian Epstein £3.5 
million to buy out the group's contract. He declines.

1964 – Record company owner Archie Bleyer closes Cadence Records after 12 
years, and retires to Wisconsin with his wife, Janet Ertel of The 
Chordettes. In the 50s, the Cadence label was home to The Everly Brothers, 
Andy Williams, Julius LaRosa, Johnny Tillotson, The Chordettes, Link Wray 
and others.

1965 – The Rolling Stones release their single, “Get Off My Cloud” b/w “I’m 
Free” in the U.S.

1965 – The Beatles cartoon series debuts in the U.S. on ABC-TV.

1966 – The Supremes appear on The Ed Sullivan Show, performing “You Can’t 
Hurry Love.” Other musical guests include Ethel Merman, Steve Rossi and 
Frank Fontaine.

1967 – The Beatles begin recording “Fool On The Hill” at Abbey Road studios.

1969 – The Plastic Ono Band - featuring John and Yoko, with Eric Clapton, 
Klaus Voorman and Ringo Starr - begin recording “Cold Turkey” at Abbey Road 
studios.

1970 – Janis Joplin records “Move Over,” “Trust Me” and “Me And Bobby 
McGee” at Sunset Sound Recorders in Hollywood. Later in the day, she makes 
her last television appearance on The Dick Cavett Show, and performs “Move 
Over.” She will be dead in nine days.

1970 – The Partridge Family, based loosely on The Cowsills singing group, 
debuts on ABC-TV.

1971 – Cat Stevens releases his single, “Peace Train” b/w “Where Do The 
Children Play.”

1971 – David Bowie appears at the Friars Club in Aylesbury, England.

1975 – While performing "Lonely Teardrops" onstage at the Latin Casino in 
Cherry Hill, New Jersey, during a Dick Clark oldies revue, Jackie Wilson 
collapses from a heart attack and hits his head on the stage so hard he 
lapses into a coma and remains that way until his death in 1983.

1976 – Wings play a charity concert in St. Mark’s Square in Venice to raise 
funds for the historic city.

1976 – Loggins and Messina play their final concert together as a duo in 
Hawaii.

1976 – Boz Scaggs performs “Lowdown” and “What Can I Say” as the musical 
guest on Saturday Night Live.

1980 – The Grateful Dead plays the first of ten nights at the Warfield 
Theatre in San Francisco.

1981 – The Rolling Stones appear at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia, and record 
and film the concert for the group’s concert film, Let’s Spend The Night

1989 – Bette Midler sues the Ford Motor Company for using a sound-alike - 
Midler back-up singer Ula Hedwig - in their Mercury Sable ads.

1989 – After firing his brother-in-law manager Frank Weber on August 30 for 
embezzling $90 million from his bank accounts, Billy Joel sues Weber for 
the $90 million in New York State Supreme Court. Joel will ultimately win 
the lawsuit, but will recoup only $2 million.

1990 – The mayor of Macon, Georgia, renames Mercer University Drive as 
Little Richard Penniman Boulevard in honor of its native son.

1990 – Drummer Dave Grohl auditions for Nirvana and is instantly given the 
job.

1992 – Two fans are stabbed and 20 are arrested after trouble breaks out at 
an Ozzy Osbourne/Alice In Chains show at the Oklahoma State Fair in 
Oklahoma City. The sale of beer at the fair is blamed for the incident.

1993 – The U.S. Postal Service releases a Patsy Cline commemorative stamp 
as part of their Country Music Legends series.

1993 – Madonna begins her Girlie Show World Tour at Wembley Arena, playing

1995 – Courtney Love is given a one-year prison sentence suspended for two

pneumonia.

1999 – Oasis’ Liam Gallagher is stopped by customs officials at Heathrow

1999 – Former Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman becomes the first major 
artist to release an album on a digital MP3 player.

2000 – A collection of letters, drawings, and other writings from Janis 
Joplin circa 1965 is sold on eBay.

2000 – Ozzy Osbourne formally requests that Black Sabbath be removed from 
the nomination list for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, calling the 
inclusion "meaningless.”

2001 – XM satellite radio begins broadcasting.

2008 – Despite threats from Islamic extremists, Paul McCartney performs at Park 
HaYarkon in Tel Aviv, Israel - 43 years after The Beatles were banned from 
playing in the country.

2011 – The New York Post reports that Sly Stone is living in a van parked 
in the notoriously rough Los Angeles neighborhood of Crenshaw. The article 
quotes the 68-year old singer/songwriter as saying, "I like my small 
camper. I just do not want to return to a fixed home. I cannot stand being 
in one place. I must keep moving."

2012 – Heart’s Ann and Nancy Wilson receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of 
Fame.
