1938 – Artie Shaw and His Orchestra record what will become his theme song, 
“Nightmare.”

1938 – The Pepsodent Show starring Bob Hope debuts on NBC Radio. At the end 
of the program, Hope sings what will become his theme song, “Thanks For The 
Memories.” The show will run for 10 years.

1948 – Country artist Marty Robbins marries Marizona Baldwin. They stay 
married until his death in 1982.

1952 – Sue Thompson makes her Grand Ole Opry debut.

1957 – Buddy Holly and The Crickets begin two days of recording sessions at 
Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City.

1957 – Elvis Presley returns to Tupelo to perform at the Mississippi-Alabama 
Fair and Dairy Show, this time as a benefit for the proposed Elvis PresleyYouth 
Recreation Center. 
Hank Garland and Bob Moore back up Presley, replacing the recently departed 
Scotty Moore and Bill Black.

1957 – Paul Anka records “You Are My Destiny” and “Waiting For You” at Bell 
Sound Studios in New York City.

1959 – Rockabilly singer Carl Dobkins, Jr., of "My Heart Is An Open Book" 
fame, enlists in the Kentucky National Guard.

1962 – Martha Reeves and The Vandellas release their single, “I’ll Have To 
Let Him Go” b/w “My Baby Won’t Come Back” on Motown.

1962 – Jerry Wallace records "Shutters And Boards" at Radio Recorders in 
Hollywood.

1963 – The National Life and Accident Insurance Company buys the Ryman 
Auditorium 
from the city of Nashville and renames it the Grand Ole Opry House.

1963 – The Rolling Stones appear at the Floral Hall Ballroom in Morecambe, 
Lancashire, with The Merseybeats, Dave Beery & The Cruisers and The 
Doogle-bugs as opening acts.

1964 – The Beach Boys make their national television debut on The Ed 
Sullivan Show, performing “I Get Around” and “Wendy.” Singer Robert Goulet 
is also on the show.

1966 – Elvis Presley reports to Paramount to begin shooting his 23rd movie, 
Easy Come, Easy Go.

1968 – At a concert in Gary, Indiana, local act The Jackson 5 opens for 
Stevie Wonder and Gladys Knight and The Pips. Knight is so impressed by the 
Jacksons that she recommends the group to Berry Gordy and Motown.

1968 – Pink Floyd appears at the Queen's Hall in Dunoon, Scotland, in front 
of 400 fans. Due to bad weather, all the ferries to Dunoon were cancelled, 
so Pink Floyd hired their own boat from Gourock and risked the rough seas 
to make the crossing.

1968 – The rock musical Hair opens at the Shaftesbury Theatre in London, 
where it will run for 1,998 performances.

1970 – The Original Amateur Hour, hosted by Ted Mack, airs its final 
episode after 32 years on CBS.

1970 – Rare Earth performs “(I Know) I’m Losing You” on The Ed Sullivan 
Show, which is being broadcast remote from the Baltimore Civic Center to 
feature Holiday On Ice. Other musical guests include Bobby Vinton and Karen 
Wyman.

1973 – Rolling Stone magazine announces that Carlos Santana has legally 
added the middle name Devadip, meaning "the Lamp of the Light Supreme," as 
a reflection of Santana's recent studies with Sri Chinmoy.

1976 – Dolly Parton's variety show Dolly! premieres on ABC. The show lasts 
one season.

1978 – Team supporter Eric Clapton sponsors a West Bromwich Albion UEFA 
cup-tie against Galatasarey of Turkey. After the game, Eric presents each 
player with a copy of his latest album Slowhand.

1979 – Elton John, sick with the flu, collapses on stage at the Universal 
Amphitheater in L.A. He finishes the show after a short break.

2000 – A thief breaks into ex-Mrs. Jagger Jerry Hall's Richmond home and 
steals jewelry worth £7000 and a laptop computer. Two of Jerry's children 
are asleep at the time while she is on stage appearing in the West End 
Show, The Graduate. The thief is later found out to be antiques dealer David 
Michael Bryce.

2000 – U2 tapes two songs on the roof of the Clarence Hotel in Dublin 
(which they own) for BBC's Top Of The Pops.

2001 – Singer Jonathan King, best known for his 1965 hit "Everyone's Gone 
To The Moon," is found guilty of molesting several young boys and is 
sentenced to seven years in prison.

2003 – Carly Simon sues the owners of New York's famous Dakota apartment 
complex, claiming they kept her $59,000 down payment after rejecting her 
rental application.

2003 – Australian singer Kylie Minogue calls in police to investigate a 
series of threatening letters when she becomes concerned after receiving 
700 letters at her home and office. The letters, which started as ordinary 
fan mail, had become increasingly aggressive over time.

2004 – Phil Spector is indicted by an L.A. grand jury on charges that he 
murdered actress Lana Clarkson on February 3, 2003.

2008 – Pink Floyd’s manager Bryan Morrison passes away after spending two 
years in a coma from brain damage received in a polo accident.

2009 – Tickets go on sale for the quickly-cobbled together Michael Jackson 
film This Is It, featuring footage of Jackson’s final three months during 
his concert rehearsals. The movie, slated to open on October 28, will run 
for only two weeks.

2011 – 85-year old Tony Bennett becomes the oldest living person to top the 
U.S. album chart when his Duets II album hits #1. The previous oldest 
performer to top the chart was Bob Dylan in 2009 with Together Through 
Life, who was 67-years old at the time.
