1944 – Louis Jordan and His Tympani Five release their single, “G.I. Jive” 
b/w “Is You Is Or Is You Ain’t My Baby” on Decca.

1944 – Billie Holiday records “Lover Man (Oh Where Can You Be)” with The 
Toots Camarata Orchestra in New York City.

1957 – In the annual New Musical Express music poll, Elvis Presley comes in 
second as England's most popular vocalist, behind Pat Boone.

1957 – Jackie Wilson appears on American Bandstand, performing “Reet 
Petite.”

1961 – The Alvin Show debuts on CBS-TV. Like the successful records from 
the ‘50s, creator Ross Bagdasarian provides all the singing vocals and 
speaking for the Chipmunks and character David Seville. The cartoon lasts 
one season, but runs for several years in reruns.

1963 – Billboard magazine reports that hot-rodding songs are the latest teen
 fad, replacing surfing songs.

1963 – 17-year old Eric Clapton joins The Yardbirds on stage for the first 
time at the Crawdaddy Club in Richmond, following the departure of original 
guitarist Anthony “Top” Topham.

1963 – The Beatles make their first appearance on Ready, Steady Go! and are 
interviewed by Dusty Springfield.

1964 – Louis Armstrong performs “Hello Dolly!” on The Ed Sullivan Show.

1966 – The Byrds begin a 13 night residency at the Village Gate in New York 
City.

1968 – Cream plays the first night of their farewell tour at the Alameda 
County Coliseum in Oakland, California.

Gorham and Brian Robertson at their concert in Aberystwyth, Wales.

1975 – Billie Jean Campbell files for divorce from singer Glen Campbell 
after 17 years of marriage.

1978 – Country music singer Tammy Wynette contacts police claiming to have 
been kidnapped at gunpoint from a Nashville shopping center by an unknown 
man in a ski mask, beaten, and then forced to drive roughly 90 miles before 
escaping her abductor. The claims are never substantiated.

1979 – ABBA’s final concert date in the U.S., scheduled for Constitution 
Hall in Washington DC, is cancelled after the band endures a terrifying 
airplane flight to Boston the previous day. The tour will resume on the 6th 
for two shows in Canada, before heading to Europe where the tour will begin 
again on the 19th.

1980 – Prior to the football game, members of Fleetwood Mac present the USC 
Trojan Marching Band with a platinum record of the album Tusk for their 
participation in its recording.

1980 – Carly Simon collapses on stage in Pittsburgh from a case of “nervous 
exhaustion.” The remainder of her tour is cancelled.

1982 – The Smiths make their stage debut at The Ritz in Manchester, 
England, with opening act Blue Rondo A La Turk.

1988 – Ringo Starr and wife Barbara Bach check into the Sierra Tucson 
Rehabilitation 
Clinic in Arizona to get sober. They stay for six weeks.
