1939 – Liverpool, England, resident Eleanor Rigby passes away at age 44.

1957 – Jerry Lee Lewis and Thurston Harris appear on American Bandstand.

1958 – Eddie Cochran records “C’mon Everybody” for Liberty Records.

1959 – Ken Brown quits The Quarrymen after an argument with Paul McCartney 
when Brown is paid for their gig at the Casbah by Mona Best but is too sick 
to perform on stage. The Quarrymen now consists of Lennon, McCartney and 
Harrison.

1959 – Brenda Lee is hospitalized in Nashville with thyroid deficiency: the 
first of many neck problems for the singer.

1963 – Elvis Presley records "Once Is Enough," "Catchin' On Fast," 
"Anyone," "Smokey Mountain Boy," "There's Gold In The Mountains," "One Boy, 
Two Little Girls," "Kissin' Cousins," "Barefoot Ballad" and "Tender 
Feeling" at MGM Sound Stage in Hollywood for the Kissin’ Cousins movie 
soundtrack.

1964 – The Shangri-Las release their single, “Leader Of The Pack” b/w “What 
Is Love” on Red Bird Records.

1964 – The Beatles play two shows on the second date of their only British 
tour at De Montfort Hall in Leicester, with opening acts The Rustiks, 
Sounds Incorporated, Michael Haslam, The Remo Four, Tommy Quickly and Mary 
Wells.

1965 – The Supremes make their debut appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show,

1970 – FCC head Nicholas Johnson responds to recent comments made by Vice 
President Spiro Agnew that attacked radio stations for playing songs that 
contained "drug culture propaganda,” saying, "If we really want to do 
something about drugs, let's do something about life... The song writers 
are trying to help us understand our plight and deal with it. It's about 
the only leadership we're getting. They're not really urging you to adopt a 
heroin distribution program, Mr. Vice President."

2007 – In a poll, U.S. music magazine Blender votes Sting the worst 
lyricists ever. The survey places Rush drummer Neil Peart at #2, Creed 
frontman Scott Stapp at #3, and Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher at #4, 
saying Gallagher "seemed incapable of following a metaphor through a single 
line, let alone a whole verse."

2009 – Roger Daltrey begins his first solo tour in 24 years at the 
Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver.

2012 – A Moscow appeals court *releases* Yekaterina Samutsevich, one of the 
jailed *members* of Pussy Riot, after learning that she was not fully 
involved in the “punk prayer” incident in a Moscow cathedral. However, the 
court orders that the other two members are to serve the remainder of their 
two-year sentence at a Russian prison colony.
