I know this is heresy but music is just not [as] important as it was to us. My 25 year old son is switched on and has a career in the Navy as a helicopter engineer. He listens to music but without the 'intensity' that we do. He enjoys it and goes to a couple of Festivals and has Spotify but can take it or leave it really. Back in the day, for instance, if I discovered an artist new to me I would search out other stuff by them. He doesn't, he listens and enjoys now [if you see what I mean]. I can't think that he ever listens to the radio [sorry Lee]. There are loads of other outlets for his interest and music is just one of them.
I used to buy the NME and read 80% of it, EVERY week. To think my nipper would even bother with that is laughable. I think music is moving to being in the background and part of the wide tapestry of computer games, Facebook, Twitter [whatever the fuck that IS], on-demand TV, films etc etc.... I think we should face up to the fact that, for the vast majority, music is now wallpaper. The rise of tribute bands is a facet of that. Why the FUCK would I want to pay good beer tokens to see somebody else do shit cover versions of a band's material when I can watch a DVD or listen to an album of the real thing? Mystifying to me.... That recent Bowie 'tribute' [the one with "legend" Debbie Harry] was just unwatchable. Who was that asshat doing [murdering more like] Heroes???
