To identify the source of these problems I need a few more pieces of
information.

1. Are you using USB 1/1.1 or USB 2.0?
("$ lsusb" will tell you.)

You need to use mplayer with libv4l like this:

$ LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l2convert.so mplayer [...]

Replace [...] with any parameters for mplayer.

Skype can be run the same way:

$ LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l2convert.so skype
