No hard feeling Hugh! The point made by Jerome Weingart about
Journalists (and how they use the terms kW and kWh) is very relevant in
my opinion. I have had a running battle with the editor of the Western
Morning News on the same point but regarding windpower. They refuse to
differentiate between installed capacity (kW peak output) and energy
produced kWh. The way I try (with varying success) is to relate it to a
car by saying that the kW equate to the top speed or performance and the
kWh relate to how much fuel you have in the tank. The argument being
that wind or hydro may not be able to provide all the 'power' (kW) all
the time but you couldn't turn down the offer of half a tank of cheap
petrol on the grounds that you would have to buy some other expensive
petrol to complete your journey. Most 'punters' don't want to know about
the technical details so in my opinion everyone in the renewables
business has to stick to simple stories and analogies that 'journalists'
(bless their cotton socks, can understand!!!).

Rupert

>Dear Hugh,
>May I tactfully suggest that your remarks about this being 'a
>technically literate forum' are a bit harsh on new contributors.

In that case I apologise to Stefano for my remark.

>Rubbishing a contribution because of a minor syntax error is a little
>arrogant!!!

I did not in any way intend to "rubbish" the message as a whole.

>I know of several professors of engineering who have made
>much greater errors. (glasshouses etc!)

I had no idea that I would cause offense - my true intention was to
combat confusion. The error was not great. It is just so
un-necessary and easy to avoid, that's all. And I am certainly no
professor, glass house or not. But I will be very grateful if anyone
points out an error in my terminology.

Apologies again. I still think it was worth pointing out. I just
don't always have a very sensitive way of stating things.
