This is a very broad question that would have infinite number of replies.

I would suggest to supply to the  group what you have available to produce
the desired power ( MINIMUM Water volume, head of the stream and the length
of the pipe from intake to turbine placement).

Your idea is practical and many has done that as well as to use it for
electrical needs in emergencies or to supplement as needed.
