Subject: [microhydro] Using Hydro to heat water

  Hi

I want to set up a very simple and low cost system generating about
1-2KW. My plan is to use it to directly heat water to provide hot tap
water and home heating. This way I can avoid batteries, charge
  controllers, inverter, etc.

Has anyone seen a similar type of installation before? Are there any
  gotchas?

  thx

  dave

  Dear Dave,
I have tried that system with my overshot waterwheel. It is the simplest system
out there, you generate power, and you use it. The problem that arises is the system
is not flexible.
I used the 1500 watts that I am producing to run a high efficiency heater and an
air conditioned. The problem that arises is , what do you do with the power when you
are not using either? I have yet to get there but I am looking to use a dummy load and
a three way switch. This way either I am producing heat, air or running the voltage to
a dummy. Very simple.
You could take this to the next level and heat a water tank. The problem that
arises with that (from what I have heard) is you have to have a temp switch for when
the water gets to hot. Then the power is diverted to something else.
With Power you are not using you can get creative with what is a dummy load. A
normal dummy load is a heating element. But at my site I run a fountain. Purely
aesthetic, but a nice way to keep a load.
