Dear Lawrence,

If shale is similar to oil and floats over the water, the solution would be a concrete
or steel tank with enough area for low velocity in the outgoing stream, up waters from
the forebay, with a separation plate for catching the floating shale and take it away
by means of a syphon or some other device.
This idea together others could help you in find the best problem solving.

Regards,

Carlos Bonifetti

My stream has large amounts of shale that comes out of the mountain. Can
anyone direct me to advice on different intake designs that best handle
shale as I am still trying to estimate the cost of this project.

    Thanks,

    Lawrence Balisky

    Dear Lawrence,
With an overshot wheel, shale would not be an issue. I am not sure what your
situation is, but it is something to think about.
