Any time the water carry heavy debris, for the life of the Turbine, it is
necessary to put a "FILTER".

Some of those filters are the"desanders tanks", intake filters and so on.

So the water carrying shale needs to be allowed to rest long enough to
permit the water to deposit the material as a sediment in the desander tank.
ALSO it is necessary to have a way for periodic desander tank cleaning by
either manual labor or the water it self washing the debris to a side
escape.

One, we made, had a desander tank feeding another tank or reservoir to allow
the turbine operation during the desanding cycle because the water was
re-routed to a lower pipe to expel the sand and small debris carried by the
stream that was fed by a river several kilometers away all the way via
underground tunnels or caves.

In this case, the desander was run every Sunday in the early hours, always
keeping the water clean,
Also a fish trap was used to avoid fishes been drawn into the turbine
pipes.

Regards

Nando
