hello All,
Does anyone know what the current use of ram pumps is in the world? Are
they used in China? Does anyone know how much microhydro is used in china, in
general?

Hallo Ron
When ever I travelled through Europe I was looking a little bit for micro hydro
inclusive ram pumps. Mostly I found rams in museum, also countryside. The last
real working one I found in the mountain in Styria(Austria) 1978. Then I tried
to find out, who invented this interesting machine with the characteristic
noise and long life time . I found in the technical museum in Munich the
history. It was a french man , (the name I forgot, could be Foucoult) in the
year 1795 . Therefore I wanted to make a competition in the year 1995( 200
years ram invention) but the echo was not so big.
There were a lot of companies in Europe which produced this ram, often made
from cast iron.
They had working life times over 30 years without big
maintainance. Used also mostly from poorer farmer.
After the electrical grid were expanded to the mountains in the 1950.., the
rotation pumps came, and
all the water also of smaller wells could be used.
Bolivien has perhaps in rural areas the same situation
like we 70 years ago.
I'm looking forward to your pictures

Hello Martin,

I know that rams were used extensively in Europe
for a number of years. It would be interesting to know
why they were largely abandoned. Any ideas?
There was a book years ago that listed rams as one
of the 55 most important inventions of all time. Now
few people have heard of them. Why?
Our interest in ram pumps comes from the fact that
we think that rams have the potential to help more
people and open up more unused land to human use than
just about any other machine--especially in places
like Bolivia.
Yesterday we once again came close to revolution over
Bolivia's gas and oil, something I doubt that many
people outside Bolivia even heard about.
This is a battle over energy.
In many areas the ram pump is the only practical way
to pump water. Microhydro is the only form of
"alternative energy" for which machines can be
produced locally.
I will send you pictures of our 2 Inch Model Ram
Pump. Ram pumps come in many shapes and sizes. We
designed this one to be made in a small shop with
locally available materials, while not sacrificing
quality or longevity. All the functioning parts can be
replaced in minutes. We supply an extra impulse with
every machine.

All the best,
