If the RCD trips immediately then there is probably a wiring fault. For example you may not have wired both hot/live and neutral through the rcd. Or you may have connected neutral to earth somewhere downstream of the rcd?
Sometimes the rcd will trip due to the capacitance of a long cable run. Or due to surge filters in the load.
