Hi,
thanks for the suggestions, but ..

Well, ldconfig does not have the option -rpath; I tried -l
(specifying a single library) and failed.

I already tried this as well, without effect. About the strange
path: This was just my choice in the mysql installation due to
limited diskspace on my /usr/local partition (which itself is
due to my mistakes when partitioning the harddisk :-)).
Now I just tried to copy libmysqlclient.so into /lib/ and it
worked ... but a few seconds later, while running make, the same
mistake emerged again as "internal.h:25: mysql.h: No such file
or directory" -- configure just seems not to be able to find my mysql
files though I did set the right --with-mysql=... option ... but why?
Any more suggestions?
Bye,
phr
