I don't have benchmark statistics to impress you with, but yes, they do.
The 'cost' is in the setup of the connection, so midgard just keeps the
connection open as long as the apache child process lives (a configurable
number of requests).

The solution proposed earlier, to dynamically open new connections
found in the metabase and keep them persistent is going to work, so
it won't be too much of a problem. I don't think the feature will
make it back to 1.2 though.
