What version of midgard are you installing?  If you are installing
1.2.6-beta2, then the following might be useful.

First make sure that you have set port in the host table of your
midgard database to 8101 and 8099 for the example and admin sites
respectively.

Then access the sites specifying the port:

          http://mydomain.com:8101/admin/

          http://mydomain.com:8099/example/

For prior versions I believe you don't have to tag on the prefix
at the end.

I struggled with similar problems and Emile was good enough to walk
me through.
