Two avenues I'm working on:

editors tha suport HTTP PUT can post data directly to the page, which
needs to handle the put, but that's the easy part. The hard part is that
the editors I've found so far don't distinguish themselves when browsing
vs editing, which would allow me to show only the content to the editor
while showing content + layout to the browser. I've tried amaya, netscape
and aolpress. I've filed a bugreport to the mozilla team but I don't
expect to see it resolved soon, if ever. Shame, because it would be the
easiest solution for us.

The other is figuring out Microsoft Webpost. This should offer a
scaled-dowwn feature set from frontpage server extensions (which manages
to be complex yet braindead) that will allow a Midgard site to receive
content by similar means as above. I think office will work, FP &
FPExpress I know of. I've been at it with a sniffer for a bit but haven't
yet figured out how to enable webpost server-side in PWS.
