Midgard can use cookies to login. call mgd_auth_midgard(username,
password) on a page and the browser will be sent a cookie with these
credentials. Make sure that this happens before any output is sent to the
browser. Just as with the normal PHP Header calls the will fail if output
was sent.

I'd use reply articles, or the article 'type' field.

Depends on your timeframe. 1.4 is slated for release in september. The
betas have been reasonably stable. If you intend to use sitegroups, go
with 1.4 and save yourself the hassle of migrating to sitegroups later.
