Eric, Your comment re Delta suggests that some of AA's 757 "retirees" did not indeed go for scrap, as mentioned earlier in this thread, but simply spent time resting in Arizona and were then picked up by DL. Do any Mifnetters have further data on this?
I recall specifically that AA's acquisition of TWA assets -- not technically a merger -- included (subject to check on the exact numbers) 27 of the 757s, which had different powerplants than AA's larger RR-equipped fleet. AA also took over nine 767s, again not compatible with the purchaser's fleet. I believe these were returned to lease companies, while AA placed a matching order for nine new 767s. The 757s were presumably operated as a sub-fleet, but I have no idea for how long. The permanent Covid-era retirement of both types was a typical flub by current America West/ USAir management. Related to the original thread re transatlantic narrow bodies, I flew a then-TWA 757 nonstop from St. Louis to Heathrow, not very long before the AA acquisition. Perfectly comfortable up front, albeit before lie-flat.
