Here we go again on the pilot age issue. I predict this will pan out pretty much exactly the same way as it did last time, in 2006 I think. The exact same arguments against the age increase will be rolled out by exactly the same groups that were against it back in 2006, citing exactly the same erroneous medical and flight safety arguments used then and motivated by exactly the same narrative. These will be more about career progression and rates of pay directed more by the self-interest of certain pilot factions than it is about fairness, ability or, dare I say it, equal opportunities.
Those arguments will then be blown out of the water by the same counter-arguments used in 2006, which were evidence-based rather than opinion-based or relying on anecdotes and the preferences of certain nations’ union bodies. That’s not to say the age will be raised internationally at this time around because sometimes reason, logic and evidence doesn’t always win the day. I think the ICAO paper and a similar one put out by EASA recently were pretty good and seemed to be generally supportive of seriously considering an age increase so it’s gloves on and seconds out because the bell has already rung for the next round. I’m looking forward to it. Years ago when the retirement age rose to 65 older pilots were a higher percentage of the unions. After so many years into this hiring boom the younger ones have far greater power. As a result none of the union leaderships are in favor of age 67. Airline managements don't like the idea either.
