Yes, I've done this on three machines running Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (one dev box, one test, and one production). I've not seen any issues so far. One thing I forgot to mention in the instructions: the two "apt-get install" commands in the instructions *must* be executed one at a time. Don't combine them as "apt-get install mysql-common mysql-server-5.1". This was mentioned in https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/403562 .
