Yes, that should be fine.

Yes, I've done this on three machines running Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (one dev box, one 
test, and one production). I've not seen any issues so far.

One thing I forgot to mention in the instructions: the two "apt-get install" 
commands in the instructions *must* be executed one at a time.
Don't combine them as "apt-get install mysql-common mysql-server-5.1".
