Hi Oliver,
Sorry to hear you are having troubles getting acquainted with Mifos
software.
Any alternative for a 'cash strapped' MFI is to actually leverage the
developers or users list (this list) to ask for help. Both mifos 2.6.x and
mifos X have been installed by many many people both technical and
non-technical - we do get feedback of course about making it easier either
in terms of better how-to docs on installation or by producing some
'one-click' installer.
Heres my advice as someone whos heavily involved in mifos project:
1) Opt for MifosX over older mifos software
2) Follow instructions provided with mifosx release artifacts to install
it, If you get stuck email this list and ask for help straightaway, dont go
searching the interest for answers yourself. Explain cleary the
documentation you are looking at, the step you are at on this
documentation, what you have done and what you are seeing that is the
problem.
I am confident we can get you past any issues you are having.
regards,
Keith.

Android is increasing in popularity, but the open development platform that
developers love is also attractive to malware creators. Download this white
