This year has been a rough ride, but it seems to be ending better than
it started.  I think the importance of the U.S. election cannot be
overstated.  It marks the beginning of the end of the divisions that
Nixon cleverly exploited to create thirty years of Republican
ascendancy based on hate and fear.  This has importance that goes far
beyond the U.S.  I am hopeful that, with the Republicans isolated (the
importance of the election goes beyond Obama and extends to a solidly
Democratic Congress), the U.S. will once more act as a member of the
world community.  It will need to--the challenges we face, both in
economics and on issues of war and peace--require a great deal of
world cooperation.
