Now that we know he received the maximum 150 year sentence, I have some thoughts.
Mr. Madoff is 71 years old, so if he's lucky (or unlucky depending on your views of prison life), he will serve no more than 10 percent of his sentence. He will be fed, clothed and provided pretty decent medical care for the rest of his life. His only worry is BUBBA, but since he will be housed with other low-level, non-violent offenders, he can probably rest easy. Meanwhile, the people he bilked will now have a considerable amount to worry about, as they attempt to navigate their golden years without their hard-earned nest egg. Instead of prison, how about sentencing Madoff to Yard Work. He can spend the rest of his days mowing the lawns and tending the weeds of all the people he screwed, and spend his nights searching for a warm curb to sleep on. Just seems to make more sense in terms of JUSTICE.
