Don, while I find it strange to appear to be an apologist for Islam, it is of note that it is a newer religion than is Christianity. Christianity has already gone through many of similar fundamentalistic eras. Even a century or two ago right here in the good ‘ol US of A one would find women not only seen as and used as chattel, but beating and outright torture, not just child labor, of others. One can only hope that over time, along with what has been occurring all along (as you asked to happen) those of less fundamentalist bent speak out, changing the manifestation of this group. Already, beliefs differ greatly from country to country. Oh, and similar to the days of actual excommunication (out of society), current day tenets of many sects of Islam require those of the faith to do horrid things to those who do not follow ‘the law’.
