Within most religious groups exists a set of fixed beliefs, dogmas/ tenets which are specific to the group. These are not flexible or subject to individual interpretation, you either believe or you don't. One cannot be a Christian if one does not believe the story of Jesus, the Virgin birth, the Resurrection and the second coming and so on. I don't see your point in a group exhibiting "control". You are the one who can decide what you believe and of course the best way to do that is to learn about what you choose to disbelieve. Decisions made from ignorance are usually not the best ones. When it comes to religion, I wish to just be left alone. I don't know why I have to be bothered by people knocking on my door and approaching me in parking lots pushing their beliefs. The information is out there, the books are ancient knowledge, the beliefs are many and have been floating around for thousands of years. For some reason people feel the need to form religious groups and organizations.
If I have to thank God for anything it would be for the fact that I don't have to fear torture and death because I choose not to believe!
