There are alternatives to money BB - but it is clearly difficult to
establish just what money is.  The systems of maintain currencies as
means of exchange are highly complex - the Germans devalued their
currency to evade paying WW1 reparations and we regularly
quantitatively ease ours to pay less for commodities and less to those
investing in us.  What would happen to the USD if it was not the petro-
currency?  Islamic banking has a rather different concept of money,
based more in taking equity than interest.  Money was essentially a
government means of getting holding of real stuff in exchange to paper
along with promises of great exploitation.  The French were once
encouraged to invest in Louisiana (then an island off the west coast
of America!), the Scots in some vile, insect-ridden bit of Panama as
'New Caledonia' and there were many South Sea bubbles, investments in
diseased tulip bulbs and on to CDOs and the Japanese penchant for
bonds in unbuilt golf courses.
A world currency was mooted long ago and there is a kind of one at the
IMF.

Democracy has a long history of not giving a damn about those not part
of it and might be better thought of as a human resourcing strategy of
an elite - these elites have been present even in communist systems
and have broadly been about 15% of the population.  The control of the
people in power is a central problematic for democracy - money clearly
has too much influence in the reverse.
