I haven't pulled it out of anything, Slip. Part of the numbers are indeed
difficult to substantiate, because of the aggressive cover up by the
Vatican. 3300 charges were never followed up on due to the priest in
question already being dead. Additionally, it's estimated that there are
twice as many substantiated cases unreported due to the authoritative nature
of the priest. I'll provide some rough numbers below, however, to give you a
basis where I've started. The point here is not just the offender in
question; it's the organizational structure, well documented, all the way up
to the Pope, who hide those crimes, and the offender.

Number of catholic priests worldwide: 400,000 and change.

http://www.allaboutreligion.org/catholic-priests.htm

Number of priests against whom allegations have been substantiated (not the
total number actually who have committed said crimes: just under 4400.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catholic_sex_abuse_cases#Scope_and_nature

Proportion: 1.5%

Percent of pedophiles who are religious: 93%

http://www.childmolestationprevention.org/pages/tell_others_the_facts.html

Estimated total population who are pedophiles: 4% (which defends your
question to me).

http://www.newworldencyclopedia.org/entry/Pedophilia

However, it's the number of victims where the numbers become clearly
disproportionate:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iogaM1XnA0I Over 10,000.

Every priest who has been investigated has had between 20-200 victims.

It's difficult to quantify hard numbers given the secrecy and cover ups, but
I'm certainly not pulling anything out of my ass.
