Yes, this is an annoyance.  I'm also not a fan of the badges but I can see
how this encourages some people to learn more how to navigate the site.
Rewards based systems work.  I just wish the reward was a little, well, less
virtual.  Say, instead of a badge you get 10 pts. and when you get 500 you
can redeem for a gift certificate or a mug or a hat or some such material
goodies.
