Matthijs -- I see no incompatibility between the two positions. We are always at the center of all we do. It is also
of value, I think, to conceive of ourselves as both subject and object. Put these tow observations together and you wind up with we give both to others and ourselves simultaneously. If we give to others we are also doing so because we like the experience of it so that giving to others is in our best interest. I think the same holds for giving to oneself. -----Original Message----- From: Matthijs <[email protected]> To: "Minds Eye" <[email protected]> Sent: Sat, Apr 3, 2010 1:19 pm Subject: [Mind's Eye] Altruism and egoism Back again with a dilemma. For quite a while I speak with people and now and then we come to the question: why do we do the things we do? Generally I come to 2 views. We live to help other people, this is the motor behind all behaviour (altruism). Or we nor live for ourself and all things we do are from a self interest view, we give love to receive it (egoism). So I was wondering how may I look at these views? Do I really only want to help myself or only help myself.
