Perhaps it does and we are just not aware of it yet.  Psychics and
clairvoyants claim to contact the deceased.  Not that I believe any of
their folderol but the idea of a consciousness without a physical body
has been around for a long time.  I think that consciousness might
just be real based solely on the physical laws of the universe (as we
understand them to be), namely the law of the conservation of matter
and energy.  Neither can be destroyed or created.  They just change
form.  What happens to our life energy when the body dies?  It's
anyone's guess and mine is that in some who are properly prepared,
that consciousness might just survive with its identity intact.
Otherwise, it probably just rejoins the vast pool of energy that
pulses throughout the universe.
