I need to care about characters otherwise it is just another one-
dimensional shoot-em-up. There are really few plots- it's the
characters that distinguish them.

I was thinking of "Dr.Who"- the original- since a neighbor returned a
star projector last week. The show was a "camp out" with my two
children that put two of us to sleep. Now, Charlie Rose (aka Peter
O'Toole lite) puts me to sleep.
