Allyn, could you see if either enabling optimistic DAD or disabling DAD entirely fixes or changes the issue for you?
This changed things. I had left the repeated start option on from earlier troubleshooting. With optimistic_dad enabled, smtpd failed like yours with no specific error, but on subsequent attempts failed on binding to the address, but the final attempt was successful. weird.
