Hi

Today I used the Aug 12 snapshot files to upgrade. It wasn't successful
as I did not read the notes at [1]. I had become complacent WRT upgrades
as over the last 6 months they've been extremely straight forward and I
foolishly assumed this one would be too.

Anyway, after finding myself locked out, I managed to get in to the
system by booting single-user mode and using /usr/sbin/pwd_mkdb on
/etc/master.passwd. I also discovered none of the pkg_script daemons
started. Nor did X.

I rolled-back to the earlier snapshot using bsd.rd and "upgrading" - so
my system is probably a bit messy now; but, everything is working as it
did.

Having read [1] properly now, I know what to do. But, I still wonder
about a couple of things:

- how will I know when my packages are ready/been updated for the change?

- As X did not work the first time, does that mean it will not work when
I do upgrade properly or do a fresh-installation of the Aug 12
  snapshot?

I suppose hardware has a time limit in terms of when it will no longer be
able to support some of the most up-to-date changes over time. I've
included a dmesg in case that is useful. It is not from the failed Aug 12
snapshot but the Jul 30 snapshot.

Sorry for asking what may seem like stupid questions. I really just
wanted some clarification on those particular points before I attempt it
again.

Thanks for your time and for the work done on this OS. And for helping
idiots like me when screwing things up. :-)

Cheers, Jamie.
