I violently disagree! And particularly in this case. Where it would be far better to avoid one whole upgrade cycle by getting the environment working with -current and moving to 5.5-stable safe in the knowledge that you don't have to re-check for flag days, configuration parsing changes, etc. Now, *buying* CD's is always highly recommended.
