It's unclear what you'd call fast and what range you expect. A card that reports itself as: athn0 at pci0 dev 17 function 0 "Atheros AR9280" rev 0x01: irq 15 athn0: AR9280 rev 2 (2T2R), ROM rev 16 is working perfectly for me as hostap in 11a mode. I don't remember what's on its label and I cannot open the box right now. I don't usually use the AP through more than one wall or within a range greater than 10m away.
