Hopefully that helps someone point out what to do about the reboot during
upgrade shortly after "Mounting root filesystem".

To consolidate answers in one sub-thread: I also tried, on the upgrade 
from CD, in addition to wd0: sd0, hd0, and sr0, but unlike wd0 those all say:
    no such disk
    Available disks are:none.
