the system has been running smoothly for day now after i prohibited disk power
management in the bios. it seems the changes in 7.8 are indeed critically
destructive.

ps: is there any way to verify if ncq is enabled for a specific drive without
recompiling the kernel with SCSIDEBUG? i tried disabling ncq for a specific
disk via quirks, but i couldn't tell if the changes were applied. the "targets"
info in dmesg(which i used as an indirect hint) is displayed for the entire
controller rather than per port. although the restored stability points to
7.8's power management changes as the culprit(which can be bypassed by bios),
i’d still like to know if there's an easier way to see these kludges(i
foolishly think that having hard-coded device models in a general-purpose
driver is exactly what "kludges" are) in action. because i am sure the guys
will fix their mistakes, and with version 7.9 the bios won't be able to help me
anymore
