without even reading teh rest of your post - you run radeon, the kind that exposes that kinda famous bug. it is fixed with a newer radeon driver. which in turn breaks a large percentage of working radeon multihead zaphod setups - like, at least the ones theo and myself run. the drama also known as oga's drama. not kidding you: for the two zaphod radeon machine i run, one only works with the in-tree driver, the other only with the uncommitted newer one.
