The patch command is also not available in every Linux default 
installation. VTK 5.8 compiles well with the newest gcc, so we don't 
need the patch there anyway. I will add a superbuild option soon to 
switch to VTK 5.8 ( timeframe today ;) ) For now you could also provide 
your own VTK by setting VTK_DIR on superbuild level. As a last 
workaround, you could use gcc4.5 on ubuntu 11.10 as well, it's available 
as a package.
