The maximum timing difference should be the same as your latency
setting inside Mixxx, and unless there's some massive clock drift
between your cards, this maximal latency should occur "infrequently".
There could be some extra layer of buffering done somewhere that I
don't understand, but this is my understanding of how everything works.

Two soundcards works OK for me. If you're not using vinyl control, a
cheap PCI soundcard with multiple outputs might do the trick well too.
I used to use an M-Audio Revolution 7.1 and it worked great, although
it only has a single stereo input
(not good for vinyl control). Alternatively, a fancier USB or Firewire
soundcard would do the trick. I'm not really sure what you're looking
for beyond multiple stereo outputs...

Wait, I just googled the M-Audio 2496 and it IS a 4x4 soundcard. Why
are you using your Creative card for headphones? Your M-Audio card has
two stereo outputs on it, and you should be able to use one of those
for headphones (with the appropriate adapter cable).

Thanks,
Albert

P.S. I've never tried the ALSA fake-multiplexed-soundcard thing,
sounds like you're playing with fire. :)
